After a year in which most experts predicted John Mayer's 'Say' to save only 1,000 marriages, the final tally came in much higher at 5,600. The lyrics seemed to cut deeper for many listeners in 2020, as the Coronavirus forced them to reflect on the things that had been left unsaid in 2019 and years prior.
As Jane from Amarillo, Texas puts it, "I had been ignoring all the great advice this song offers for several years when it would play on Spotify, and even before that when I would listen to The Bucket List soundtrack in my car. My life really took a turn for the worse when my husband Dean and I separated for a few weeks back in April. I took that time to reconnect with some of my old favorite tunes on Spotify, and John Mayer's 'Say' hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew what I had to do. I needed to say what I needed to say. Dean and I have not looked back since. John Mayer's 'Say' saved my marriage."
